Meet Storyteller Stephanie Gibson

Stephanie Gibson is an artist working and living in Lancaster, PA. She co-owns Third Story Art with fellow artist Leah Fox.

Steph's earliest memory of creating is finger painting as a child. She loved the silky texture of the paint and the way it felt to move it around the paper.

She works out of her home studio, nestled among the tall trees that surround her property. When I had asked if she listens to anything while she works she was adamant that the sounds outside her window were enough. When I paused to listen, I understood why. You could hear the songs of various birds, a few spunky squirrels working out a feud, and the telltale sound of Summer cicadas.

As someone who is usually looking at the ground on nature walks, Steph is always looking up. She looks for new tree growth, how the light plays against the leaves, how the color of the sky weaves itself into the canopy of the trees.

Steph's work is rooted in the joy of what she discovers in these woods. If you find that you can't get yourself to the woods every day, looking at Steph's paintings will soothe that need just fine.

Steph describes her ideal day of inspiration and wonder.

— Walking in the woods is an important part of everyday inspiration. But to balance my studio time, my "production" periods, I love to make space for reflective time. My favorite way to inspire reflection is to take the train to New York and wander the galleries in Chelsea and the East Village. I take a lot of pictures of the art I like and then organize those photos in my studio book with notes next to each about what I like or what it reminds me of.
