Photo Tips: Propping with Purpose

What are props and when do you need them?

A prop is any item in a photograph that is not your main point of focus. It is any additional element in your image that helps tell the story.

You need props whenever you are photographing…well, anything.

I use props in almost all of my own photography and it is a key part to creating a custom vision for my photography clients. Propping for a photo shoot is the icing on the cake.

Client: Cynthia Oswald
For this project, we used many pieces from Cynthia’s studio. Items that inspired her daily creative work, and have meaning to her.

Here are my Top 5 Tips for Props

Tip #1

Choose props with differing heights. This encourages the viewer’s eye to wander through the image, holding their attention for much longer.

Tip #2

Group items in odd numbers. Our brains find this super appealing, practically melting with satisfaction. I personally believe groups of 3 and 5 work best.

Tip #3

Explore textures, colors and shapes when choosing props. It’s ok to go overboard when organizing props. My favorite method is to put way too much into the scene and then start editing what doesn’t make sense or causes too much attention to one piece/area.

Tip #4

Use items that are naturally inspiring to you as your props for photography. These items can be used over and over, enhancing the story you tell. It also gives your viewer an idea of who you are, and why you do what you do

Tip #5

When prop shopping, I’ll always recommend second hand stores first - you can find pieces that feel one of a kind and begin cultivating a truly unique prop collection.

For more seasonal items I like HomeGoods, Target, and craft stores.

Client: Balance Bound Co.

We used vibrant, warm colors in the props that we chose for Balance Bound’s 2022 Planner. Texture also plays a huge role in this image, giving the image more depth.

On the flip side, the propping used for this image is giving us dark academic, apothecary vibes. Using a dark background, dark pillar candles, brass elements and glass bottles really transports you into the scene.
